Beyond Cancers

Mesothelioma, Possibly The Worst Cancer Known To Man

Mesothelioma is maybe fortunate for many a rare cancer that attacks the body's mesothelial cells around the organs. It is important to treat this Mesothelioma type cancer in the early stages otherwise it, like some asbestos disease mesothelioma, proves fatal. Various mesothelioma treatments are surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

Pleural mesothelioma, Peritoneal mesothelioma and Pericardial mesothelioma all effect the mesothelium which provides a protective membranous lining for the internal organs and allows moving organs to glide easily against adjacent structures.

The names of the three regions of mesothelial cells that provide protective coating are:

1) Pericardium, the sac which surrounds the heart.
2) Pleura, the sac which surrounds the lungs;
3) Peritoneum, the lining which protects the abdominal cavity; and

Pleural mesothelioma: Pleural mesothelioma is a type of lung cancer which attacks the pleura surrounding the lungs, this is the most common type of mesothelioma, affecting approximately two-thirds of all mesothelioma patients. Symptoms include horseness, fever, blood in sputum, swollen arms and face, coughing, loss of weight, difficulty breathing, chest pain, weak muscles, and reduced tactile sensitivity.

Peritoneal mesothelioma: A cancer called Peritoneal mesothelioma is cancer of the abdomen which attacks the peritoneum lining the abdominal cavity. This affects approximately one-third of all mesothelioma patients. Symptoms include abdominal bloating, impaired bowl function, fever, swollen feet, and nausea.

Pericardial mesothelioma: Fortunatly Pericardial mesothelioma is rare. This form of mesothelioma which attacks the pericardium surrounding the heart is extremely rare. Symptoms include chest pain, dyspnea, cough, and palpitations.

Mesothelioma has been linked to asbestos exposure.

Asbestos, Chrysotile in it's natural form, is a type of building material used in thermal insulation products and ceiling tiles. In the United States, asbestos usage peaked during the 1950s - 1970s. During the late 1960s, concerns over the health consequences of asbestos exposure began to arise, thereby decreasing the amount of asbestos manufactured in next two decades. By the 1980s, a new industry of asbestos abatement began to flourish. But according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as many as 733,000 schools and public buildings still contain asbestos from Chrysotile.

Occupational asbestos exposure: People working in factories that manufacure asbestos are likely to have a high exposure to asbestos and are most at risk of developing asbestosis or mesothelioma.

Small asbestos fibers that enter the air do not evaporate and can remain suspended in the air for a long time. These fibers, when breathed into the body, are toxic. There are three types of asbestos exposure.

Para occupational asbestos exposure: Family members of workers exposed to asbestos in the workplace are susceptible to exposure from asbestos dust brought home by the worker on his clothes or skin.

Neighborhood asbestos exposure: Those who live in the vicinity of an asbestos manufacturing plant are also at risk.

Mesothelioma is still a relatively rare form of cancer. There are an estimated 2,000 - 3,000 new cases per year in the United States. Approximately 7-13 per one million male patients with a history of asbestos exposure contract mesothelioma. A major problem when it comes to treatment of this cancer is that a diagnosis usually occurs 20-40 years after initial exposure to the asbestos.

Tea 101: An Overview

By Gina Taylor

In The Beginning... There Was Tea

Tea has been an item of trade and tribute for at least three thousand years. It was first cultivated and brewed in China, and many of the best varieties still come from China. Some of the finest oolongs in the world are grown in Taiwan. Japan also produces a considerable amount of green tea, most of which is consumed domestically.

The British started drinking Chinese tea and loved it. They began trading tea with other countries. To maximize profits, the British set up big tea plantations in India and cut the chinese out. Sri Lanka and India produce a large amount of the world's supply of tea.

What Exactly Is Tea?

Tea is a drink made by infusing leaves of the tea plant (Camellia sinensis, or Thea sinensis) in hot water. The name 'tea' is also used to refer to the leaves themselves; and it is also the name of a mid- to late-afternoon meal in the British Isles and associated countries, at which tea (the drink) is served along with various foods.

The three main categories are green, black, and oolong. All three kinds are made from the same plant species. The major differences between them are a result of the different processing methods they undergo. Black teas undergo several hours of oxidation in their preparation for market; oolongs receive less oxidation, and green teas are not oxidized at all.

There are, of course, many different varieties within these three main categories.

What Is Herbal Tea

Herbal tea is tea mixed with herbs. Many people, to avoid confusion, do not call Herbal tea "tea" but instead use names like:

1. Herbal infusion with just means a herbal tea that is steeped in hot water.

2. Tisane which is the French word for every type of herbal drink.

Tisane usually has the following herbs: lemon verbena, peppermint, rose hips, and chamomile. Some companies specialize exclusively in herbal blends.

The FDA has increased pressure on companies that make herbal infusions that have some pretty crazy health claims on their packaging. But some herbs do have scientifically proven health benefits. For example, peppermint has a calming effect on the stomach. Keep in mind though that herbs can also cause health problems for example Chamomile can cause an allergic reaction.

Producing Quality Colloidal Silver

By Kelly Goldsborough

Creating Colloidal Silver is not a complex activity. Nearly all of the equipment is electronic and the colloidal silver is formed through the process known as electrolysis. The colloidal dispersion of silver and water is described as an electro - colloidal hydrosol. Very pure silver rods, acting as electrodes, are immersed into demineralized or distilled water and a low voltage DC current is applied to the silver rods. The silver atoms the sit on the edge of the positive silver electrode (anode) will detach from the anode as a positively charged (+) nano-sized ions which ultimately gather to produce small clusters or very fine silver metal and soluble ionic silver.

During the disintegration of the positive silver electrode or the sintering off phase, a single silver atom can lose an outer electron and it must quickly find a replacement electron from another element. This is known as the ionic silver stage. Ionic silver isn't a stable substance; it will immediately begin to attempt to locate a "free" electron to adhere to in order to become a whole silver atom again. However the ionic silver will just as readily attach itself to any suitable "free" electron from another element, in this way it becomes a silver based chemical. When it cannot discover an electron it will stay put as the considerably more toxic monovalent ionic (Ag+) silver ion which can turn into a chief impurity in some preparations.

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO MAKE A GOOD QUALITY COLLOIDAL SILVER?

Many colloidal silver water manufacturers tend to confuse the truth in their literature and advertising by incorrectly claiming only the total percentage of silver in their products is the indication of their potency. This total silver content is expressed as 'parts per million" or ppm. It would be more accurate and relevant to indicate the actual percentage of 'metallic silver' and 'ionic silver' within their colloidal silver preparation. There is a big difference between metallic silver particles and ionic silver. One is lethal to pathogens and the other being a toxic silver chemical interacts with the body.

Metallic silver particles are pure silver atoms that can bunch together to form nano- sized particles of pure silver that is insoluble (does not dissolve or react in water). The chemical symbol AgO is the utilized to confirm pure metallic silver.

Wrist Brace Can Be One Of The Most Helpful Tools When Dealing With Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

By Tom Nicholson

Carpal tunnel syndrome can appear for anyone, but it's most prevalent in the 20 to 50-year-old age group. People of this age are usually in the workforce and do repetitive wrist or hand movements daily, for several hours a day. Studies also show that women suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome more than men do, although men, too, suffer from this disability. One reason is that the women in general have smaller wrist bones and therefore have less space for the tendons that exist in the carpal tunnel. Therefore, they are more susceptible to symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome and the inflammation that is part of it.

Regular strenuous or repetitive movements can cause the tendons to inflame within the carpal tunnel, which can cause the median nerve to be compressed in the wrist. For some people, a small amount of inflammation may produce tingling symptoms or numbness, while others may be active for quite a while before symptoms begin to be truly bothersome. However, once the median nerve is compressed because of repetitive movements, carpal tunnel syndrome is not going to dissipate without treatment.

Because of regular strenuous or repetitive movements, one can suffer from inflammation of the tendons in the carpal tunnel causing pressure on the median nerve in the wrist. For some, slight inflammation can produce numbness or tingling while others will continue to be active for quite some time before the symptoms will bother them.

Being proactively prepared so that you can minimize and even eliminate symptoms will help prevent further damage, and will also keep symptoms from reappearing in the future. It may also help you to talk with someone else who has carpal tunnel syndrome, but remember that his or her experience can be very different from your own. Therefore, what works for someone else may not work for you. Do keep an open mind and try different possible treatments until you find something that works for you.

One of the most effective ways to help treat carpal tunnel syndrome is by wearing a wrist brace. Wrist braces can be purchased in either short or long styles, and you can wear them during the day, during the evening, or all the time. There are several different styles and choices to choose from, all of which is to help you gain wrist strength back and get your days without much discomfort.

Some wrist braces go around the hand and leave your fingers and thumb completely free, while others don't include the fingers and thumb at all in the wrist brace. Whichever brace you choose, though, you will need to also do regular stretching exercises so that the muscles can regain strength and the tendons can regain flexibility; this can help you return to full functioning and avoid experiencing atrophy while you heal.
